Red Faction

"Join the Revolution" is the motto of this game, perhaps it is supposed to entice the inner rebel in you or is just something a fat bloke thought of over a packet of crisps and a danish. Either way it sets another suspicious storyline in a new offering of first person shooting action. Of course, as usual in games which try to combine action with a story, you play the 'good' guy. The one who manages never to get killed even though he's an average miner running around with a gun surrounded by infinate uniformed guards and mounted machine guns. You play Parker, working in the mines run by Ultor Coporation on Mars. After being treated to the only single motion video sequence in the game that I can remember they actually get to the relevent part. The other miners are suffering from the bad living conditions, there's a conveniently placed plague running around and the workers are tired of eating cat food and a rebellion sparks off. That's the story.

For some unknown reason, you are the centre of this rebellion. Running around in your little miner suit at first stabbing insanely at guards with an electronic stick; it's fair to say the game starts slowly. Running through the mine's tunnels becomes tedious and even the appearence of a huge vehicle with a drill doesn't liven things up enough. My advice is to stick with it as you soon get attached to shooting people.. as you do.

If you've played any first person shoot 'em up you will be able to relate with this game. In some ways it resembles Half Life, it borrows the Timesplitter's control system and for an unexplainable reason I kept reminiscing of 'In Cold Blood'... if you are (un)lucky enough to have played it, you'll probably still not understand.

The graphics in this game are what you would expect; quite good. Nothing special, nothing that makes you tingle with excitement but still acceptably consistent. You can ignore all claims that you can blow up every wall in this game because to be honest you can't, very few walls can claim to hold this attribute so don't get your hopes up. All in all the graphics are pretty smooth and such as in Goldeneye, alot of different locations have been included to add a useful variety to the game.

Red Faction being a first person shooter; has everything you would expect a first person shooter to have. It has weapons, guns, the infamous Rocket Launcher, it has lots of enemies with guns and involves you running around shooting your gun whilst avoiding being hit by someone else shooting their gun. Fairly simple to comprehend even for the slower members of the community.Play this game as it was designed; simply. Play it as a first person shooter, don't expect a storyline or character interaction, complex sub plots or interesting conflicts. Just jam down the trigger and run, and everything will be okay.

As I mentioned; the gameplay is simple and fairly straighforward and the most mentally taxing tasks involved pressing buttons or pulling levers to open doors. If I had to pick out one task that could be described as tricky it would be shooting a man sitting at his desk to get his key card, and that pretty much sums up the recommended mental interllect needed to play. Which is perhaps (as some people might say) why I enjoyed it so much.

The control system, compared to the good old days with such games as Doom, is innovative and new or the same old. It depends on which platform you play it, there is nothing too complex about and as long as there is a button for shoot; it doesn't really matter what everything else does now does it?

The gameplay is great, the shooting is great, the storyline is expectedly suspect. It's probably best not to question why some of the things that happen actually happen, and just play. The script is the bare minimum it could be, and definately won't inspire anyone to make a Hollywood Blockbuster. There are literally no cut scenes or videos during this game, there is no real ending which does take the edge off all the killing, but if you can survive without those two then you shouldn't have a problem with this game.

In summary, it's not new and it's not original, it doesn't do anything not done before and it's not perfect. But it does do what it should, and does it well. When you press shoot the character on the screen shoots, and the same for all the other buttons and actions... so it was programmed properly. The graphics are good and the weapons featured are a nice tidy bunch of machines, which are as follows: Control Baton, Riot Shield, 12MM Pistol, Submachine Gun, Automatic Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Remote Charges, Grenades, Flame Thrower, Rocket Launcher, Rail Driver, Precision Rifle, Heavy Machine Gun and the Fusion Rocket Launcher.
