The WAN Budget 2002

Whilst thinking about my upcoming article entitled ‘what is the online net, can I use it to make toast’ – I reached the idea of comparing it too a mega corporation. What is the main thing that a corporation of any size has..? Of course the answer is ‘a budget’. This is where TON fall short – there is no money in the entire network, and this is both useful and harmful. It is useful in the fact that we cannot be fined as we have no money and Harming in the fact that we have no money – period.

So, I was talking to Hardcastle – whilst creating community, the – and this is a brief snippet of the conversation we had:

[21:13] Paul>> ihatemyself.org: my profile remains unchanged
[21:13] you told me where iv gotta be;: i havnt rebuilt any of them
[21:13] you told me where iv gotta be;: thats not the point
[21:13] you told me where iv gotta be;: i am adding
[21:13] Paul>> ihatemyself.org: oh
[21:13] Paul>> ihatemyself.org: aah
[21:13] Paul>> ihatemyself.org: ingenious
[21:13] you told me where iv gotta be;: im not going to sit and re-write them all for no reason
[21:13] you told me where iv gotta be;: our budget doesnt reach that far
[21:14] Paul>> ihatemyself.org: we have a buget?
[21:16] you told me where iv gotta be;: yes
[21:16] Paul>> ihatemyself.org: wow

Review of Company Figures:
There are no figures, but as has been shown by the inactivity of most associates, the funds are at an all time low. ‘The funds’ are not monetary, but are calculated on the amount of time it takes to get various ‘adventures’ complete.

As shown below – the money required to run the network can be listed quickly:

Renewing Domain Names: a few notes
Paying for .Mac hosting: $0, as we would never pay $100 for something that was at one time free of charge
Covering legal bills: £0
Playing catch with Jameson: Priceless
TON server: free from Hendy
Broadband: 15 quid a month on top of NTL subscription. (A year, plus extras = £200)

A total of only £230

And that is meaningless – so there’s no point in even writing it down. Now, the important thing to remember – is the amount of time that is needed to make each member of the network.

Lets say it takes 10 hours to build a site from scratch and to upload it the first time, and then an hour and a half to update it from then on. This is only an estimate of course, as some updates take a lot longer, and some take only a few minutes.

A standard TON update may seem to only be the uploading of an article or two, and the modification of some text, but just getting jay motivated to do this takes around 2 days PER UPDATE. This is on top of the time needed to format the articles, and even make graphical decals.

So, a site takes 10 hours, and then an hour and a half per time.
If the online net is updated once per two articles, then that makes 97 updates just from the articles, then there is KENTS, with another 40 or so updates, LANc with 20 updates, and the community which has been updated twice, and the online net alone has taken a lot of hours. I need to work this out…

97 x 1.5 = 145.5
+
40 x 1.5 = 60
+
20 x 1.5 = 30
+
2 x 1.5 = 3
+
Add 10 hours for TON, 10 hours for Kent’s, 10 hours for LANc, 10 hours for community, and 7 hours for the complaints department.

=
That gives the online net a total of 285.5 hours.

Then there is wide asleep itself, which has had around 30 updates, as well as 10 hours for creation. That’s another 55 hours. Added to that there is SITS this has had 15 updates, and a total of 32.5 hours. There is also emotion Hendrix, which has had at least 40 updates, and that makes 70 hours.

So far we have 443 hours.

There is also The Rocket Launcher and I Hate Myself, and also there was TONmagic, each having around 20 updates on top of the 10 hours base time. This is a total of 30 hours per site. The final sites are the offline net, and the truth lies. The offline nets updates were moved into Kent’s, however it still had the 10 hours base time, much like the truth lies, which has had 4 updates, and a total of 16 hours. This section has 116 hours work.

This gives a sub total of 559 hours.
There are only a few things left to add on, and these are:

Network trips – for example trips to town with a digital camera, or time in school spent taking photos: 10 hours

Anger time – time spent arguing with members of the public about the practises of the network – 5 hours.

Waste-of-time-time – this includes the time wasted while trying to set up lamppost spotter, and the TON server – 8 hours.

Anything more is too trivial to worry about.

So the Grand total in time is: 582 hours.

If we were working at a standard rate of £4.00 an hour that would be a total of £2328, added on to the original amount paid for the hosting etc… That makes the network worth £2558.
For Real
