The Rise and Fall of TON Magic

Since the creation of The Online Net in 2002, there have been a number of internal sections that I myself developed, we would probably call them features now. Well we still do, except they are also known as sites in their own right, franchises if you will. Features such as Community Football and Lan Central have gone through this transition and are now run by other members of the network. Along with these however, there are projects which bear the TON name and one of these is the subject of my article: TON Magic.

David Randall was a Magic: The Gathering player, and the domain http://www.tonmagic.co.uk/ was registered to host his site. It got off the ground quickly for a new and perhaps obscure site in the network, articles rained in from those who had never written on the main site; Grantchester, Hulley etc and it was all good. Unfortunately like any other game the popularity eventually faded, and the site became obselete. Davey Rand took over LAN Central and hasn't looked back since, but we thought since the opening of Wide Asleep Retro that it was time to find out just what went down in 'The Rise and Fall of TON Magic' from the man himself,

Interview with David Randall:

Hi Dave, so you're the man behind such sites as TON Magic and LAN Central, what motivates you to be the best time and time again?
Dave - Money for porn, thats just about it

Can you tell us a little bit about ton magic and how it came about?
Dave - It's about a popular card game called magic that pits more than one deadly sorcerers against each other. The site had some articles and features like card of the week and the giveaway.

The aforementioned TON Magic is now lost to the dark murky depths of Wide Asleep Retro - what happened?
Dave - There were several contributing factors to the end of TON magic. The first was the fact that I am a lazy bastard and everything I touch turns to shit. Others include no one likes magic anymore, iTools closed down and I realised I wasn't getting any money. One sec, I have to let hendy out.

Do you think the ultimate failure of the site was down the fact that hulley was actually gay?
Dave - Looking back I think that was an overridding factor, the fact that hulleys articles and himself were infact gay scared most of the viewers away...

What have you been up to since the closure of the site?
Dave - I hit the booze pretty hard after iTools shut down, I was dissillusioned after the closing of the best free host on the net

There have been rumours circulating that after iTools were removed, you were unable to sustain an erection for three months, are these rumours true?
Dave - The boozing reaching such a state that there was more alchohol in my blood stream than blood. That probably explains it
So it's true?
Dave - Yes, but now I can. I assure you

After TONM closed down, you took over the running of lan central full time, how has this affected time spent with your family?
Dave - It didn't really, I spent many months training a monkey to program HTML when I was running TONMagic for that very eventuality. One sec, have to restart server... right, you were saying... ah yeah, so the monkey handles everying. Except when its ill, which explains the late updates.

What kind of monkey is it
Dave - One of those ones with tails...

Is it true that the winner of two of the giveaways only recieved one of his prizes?
Dave - I deny all knowlege to that ever happening
You're just a dirty criminal really aren't you?
Dave - Not since the charges were reversed

Have you ever used the fact that you were the creator of a little known card game website to seduce young girls and gain entrance to popular night clubs?
Dave - Only on three sperate occasions... no, four.

OK and finally, what's next for david randall?
Dave - I'm hoping to own my lesbian pornography company, hopefully i'll get the domain name www.dykesonline.com and buy lots of soup.

As I already mentioned, the site in it's old state can be found on Wide Asleep Retro although unfortunately it is an early version before Grant had submitted his 10 or so articles. Sometime in the near future we hope to find this version and get that online as well. Until then, this has been the true story of TON Magic as it opened, went about its business, and then closed in record time. A very short lived career, but one that will always be in our memories.
