IMDb Top 250 Challenge

I can't decide whether it counts as a challenge or not when I decided to do it myself, alas that's what I've decided to call it. And it's epic!

Yes, it's self-explanatory but I'll do a run-down anyway. After another round of those journal dealies showed up, I was pleased to discover I'd seen quite a substantial amount of films that featured in the Internet Movie Database's 'Top 250 Movies of all-time'. I can't remember the exact figure now, but the idea that it was substantial has stuck in my head.

From then on I have been actively persuing the films I haven't seen and cutting into the list as fast as possible. It's not an easy task, and it's not something you can do in a fortnight either. I've been buying them on dvd from hmv and the internet, i've found vhs copies of some in my parent's collection and seen some on TV. I've borrowed a couple from friends and I even saw Sideways at the cinema, and that was probably the most recent film in the snapshot list I took.

By the time I've finished, which could be anywhere from another two months to another six, my list will be complete but the current list at imdb.com will have moved on. Time waits for nobody in the harsh world of film-chasing. New releases are making it in there almost every month, amongst them Million Dollar Baby, Ray, Hotel Rwanda, Downfall and the most recent; Sin City. I could find myself 10 or perhaps 20 titles down on my 250, suddenly I'm failing the challenge again, but that in itself presents an on-going challenge and a way of maintaining my interest in the crazy world of ratings and rankings.

The challenge will conclude (at whatever time it may be) with a double-viewing of The Godfather (#1) and The Godfather: Part II (#4). It's a little nod to the old saying "saving the best until last", and I think I'll be at the best point possible for judging whether or not it really is the best film of all-time. I will have the ultimate comparison with the 248 other productions that I've seen - the majority of which in the last 12 months.
