The Challenges, part 3
It's been a long time coming, but the first article of the sixth year of the new millenium is the new chapter in an old series. In the past year and a half there haven't been too many new challenges. University has broken up the many months of time that the local mentalists can spend together, so social encounters on a large scale are limited to holidays and challenges in between are small and often insignificant. That hasn't stopped me from scraping the bottom of the barrel to come up with a few more though. Check 'em out.
15. The Sessodio food consumption challenges The Challenge: These small challenges took part in Lincoln and Ipswich to test whether Jay or Rawson could eat certain foods the quickest. a) Ferrero Roche This first challenge set the precedent for the ones to follow. It was simple in planning and execution; Jay and Rawson would each have one box of 12 Ferrero Roche chocolates and the first to eat all 12 and drink a warm mug of coffee would be declared the winner. By the time Rawson was placing his coffee mug back onto the table, Jay still had 4 chocolates to go. It wasn't even a contest. Undeterred by this, Jay set about finding an eating challenge that he could actually win. b) Tesco Value Chocolate Rawson didn't win this one, neither did Jay. David Randall joined in on the fun on a slow afternoon in 2005 where the menu consisted of 1.5 bars of dark Value chocolate. There are no records of the event to suggest who came second, but there is no doubt that Randall destroyed the competition. 16. Red Dwarf Marathon The Challenge: To watch every episode of the British sitcom Red Dwarf in one 24-hour period. This challenge was attempted without the aid of the official DVDs, without a television, in fact without even a care in the world. A folder full of every aired episode, including the infamous U.S. pilot was opened, a few beers and nachos too. Rawson and Jay sat down early on a slow Ipswich afternoon and would not rise except for the odd toilet break and sanity intake of fresh air. Many months after the conclusion of this challenge attempt, it is still unknown whether either successfully completed it in its entirity. Rawson fell asleep for 3 episodes in Series VIII and Jay's eyes closed for at least 5 minutes during Back in the Red, part II, however, due to the size of the task at hand, the Red Dwarf Marathon has never been attempted since, nor the record challenged.
