How We Update
THE MOST EXCITING ARTICLE IN THE WORLD... EVER!! 2
The process of updating pages and content on The Online Net is one which no one who hasn't done it can understand, but today my friends I will attempt to enlighten you to the way we do it, how it works and what makes us think you care all the same.
The first stage to updating is having something to update, usually we don't actually 'update' any pages except for the comedy, article and sound pages and the main page, so it's usually a new page about to be 'upped'.
Definition: 'Upped' = Uploaded
Definition: 'Downed' = Downloaded
So assuming we have nothing to update, and we usually dont without originality, we're going to create a new page, a new article most likely, such as this one.. how convenient.
The first step to creating the finished article is to open up the Page Template in Notepad: Millenium Edition which is then saved as the chosen file name for the final product. The page template is located at:
file:///c:/windows/desktop/website/newer/pagetemplate.html
Once the page template has been saved to the chosen filename, ie. this has been saved as theprocess.html, it is loaded up in a preview browser, in the case of Jay this is Internet Explorer 5.5 Slide Show Edition, and for the Robe it is Internet Explorer 6.0, we do not condone the use of Netscape Navigator and never have so we do not test any of our pages in that browser. So if you use it - we don't care.
Then it's time to do the content, this speaks for itself and involves pushing keys and moving cursors all over the shop.. you get the idea. Once the document is finished, it's refreshed for the last time in preview and then it's time to add the linkage. If it's an article the first page to be changed is:
file:///c:/windows/desktop/website/newer/articles.htm
where we will add the article at the top and maybe drop off one of the old ones if necessary. After that it depends on whether or not I can be bothered to add it to the main page as an update or main heading.. usually i dont straight away. So all the files have been either created or updated, and it's time to up them to the server. To do this we use WS_FTP, a 30 Day Trial edition on it's 714th Day. Before that I have to disconnect from NtlWorld and connect to FreeNetName which actually costs me local rate for dial up. Then we open WS and up to the server the latest files edited since the previous update.
Once files have been upped I hack in to:
http://www.theonlinenet.co.uk
and click refresh to see the finished work, checking out all the updated pages at the same time. Then my work is done for another day. Very satisfactory.
